The Magazine

interesting points from Chapter 5: The Magazine, of Seven Days in the Art World:

Thornton argues that the jargon of mechanics is similar to the jargon of art criticism and should remain distant from those who don't understand it.

The generalization that writers at Art Forum magazine are merely trying to earn a reputation because of the lack of compensation is an interesting one. She says that their "glory meter" that motivates them to write for pleasure "smiles and [they] notice that [they] are starving to death."

Magazine as a promotional vehicle... keeping the market in mind...

the magazine under attack from many areas: artists, critics, dealers, etc. the magazine held in such high regard.

The contradiction that the magazine is blessed to be the destination of glory writers, but difficult to be bossed and shepherded like a "pack of wolves."

  1. We cancelled our Art Forum subscription a while back because is had become Ad Forum, with a few PhD students writing the articles. Not what it was.
